/blog/ noun 1. An online journal. Full name, Web Log (typically updated daily)

Daily?! Ha ha, no not here. For a daily or weekly dose of baby images you can follow Starla Wise Photography on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. Since most of my time is occupied behind the camera, my blog is randomly updated. So check in often. This is where I'll share recent sessions, studio information, and maybe a personal story or two. Thank you for taking the time...

Expecting / East Bay Area Photographer

I’m often asked if I do maternity, engagement, or “not just newborns”.  The answer is… I aspire to.  There is a misconception that if you can photograph something well you can photograph everything well!  Just because you can whip up a mean batch of homemade cupcakes using your award winning secret family recipe passed down generations doesn’t mean (…well shouldn’t mean) that you would accept a commission to make a 3 tier wedding cake for 200 people.  At least not before you’ve spent time experimenting and learning the difference between the two.   I am passionate about my photography. I can’t express enough how much I love photographing a newborn baby in their first week of life.  I have and continue to invest absurd amounts of time and money in learning the craft of studio light  and working with newborns.  That being said, my love for photography itself is what pushes me to always learn new things.

Yes I know a thing or two about cameras and light and I could manage to take a family picture for you.  But if it’s just a picture it may as well have been taken with a tripod and a timer.  My purpose is to capture and create emotion.  This requires creativity, knowledge, and above all practice. So in between newborn shoots, on weekends, and with every image of my own life and family, I study.  I snap away and I barter with family and friends so that one day I can offer to all of you (whom I am so appreciative and flattered that you already ask) “not just newborn” sessions!  In the meantime I hope you enjoy me sharing the images along my journey.

And so (Drumroll) without further ado:

“She doesn’t look pregnant” you might be saying.  Well she is and excitedly so!  This was actually a session to announce to the family the new addition is on its way.  Perhaps there will be a part two where you will get to see this beautiful mama and her baby bump. Stay tuned…

Happy Mother’s Day weekend to all the mothers I know (and don’t know), to anyone who cares for children as if they were their own, and to all the dads who play both roles.

I especially want to say Happy “Very First” Mother’s day to all my first time moms this year! Cheers to all of us who brave the day to day in what is the greatest joy and heartache all rolled into one!
